Sprinkler Head Repair

Fix your broken sprinkler Heads

About Sprinkler Heads:

For most able-bodied people, replacing a sprinkler head is an easy job you can do on your own. Sprinkler heads take about five minutes to replace and cost between $5-$25, depending on the type of sprinkler head and where you get it. At Storm Sprinklers, we almost exclusively use Rain Bird sprinkler heads and nozzles, because we have found them to be the highest quality heads on the market. â€‹

Sprinkler Heads come in two main types: rotor heads and spray heads. Of the two, spray heads are more common, but rotor heads are often used on larger sections of grass to cover more space. All heads - rotors and sprays alike - have a few main parts: nozzles, risers, caps, bodies, and inlets. The size of each of these pieces varies depending on the sprinkler head you are using, but the process for replacing them is similar every time. First, we dig up the grass and dirt around the sprinkler, carefully cutting the grass and placing it to the side to be replaced later. Then, after digging to the base of the head, we unscrew it and put a new one into the same connection. â€‹

Sprinkler heads are the most common issue on any sprinkler system, because they are generally the most exposed part of the whole system. That means sprinkler heads get stepped on, mowed over, and hit with snow-blowers, causing them to break and leak or spray water unnecessarily. If you have a lot of broken sprinkler heads, or heads spraying the wrong areas, we recommend a full system adjustment.

Sprinkler Valve Repair

Fix your broken sprinkler valves

About Sprinkler Valves:

Sprinkler valve repairs are one of the most common types of sprinkler repairs, because valves go bad often and are too complex for most people to repair on their own. If one of your sprinkler stations won't turn on or won't turn off, you probably have a problem with your valve. Sprinkler valves are found throughout your property in green rectangular boxes that have the words "irrigation control valve" on the lids. Valves are usually found in sets of 2-4 per box, and each valve corresponds to a station on your sprinkler timer.

Sprinkler valves have 3 main parts: a solenoid, a body, and a diaphragm. They also have various other pieces such as flow control, bleed screw, and filters. If a valve won't turn off or on, the problem is usually either coming from the solenoid or the diaphragm. Replacing both will fix any valve that isn't leaking.

Valves generally last 10-15 years if your system is properly winterized year after year. However, sometimes valves can last 20 years or more. Because of this, sprinkler valves break after their model has been discontinued, making it difficult to rebuild a valve. That means we usually have to replace the entire valve, which means digging, cutting, and gluing. If one of your valves is bad, the ones it shares a box with are also on their last leg, so our policy is that if we're replacing one valve, we replace the other valves in the box as well. This allows us to rebuild the valve manifold and install a new one that is easier to take apart for repairs later on.

Sprinkler Valve FAQs:

My sprinklers are stuck on/Won't Turn off.

If your sprinklers won't turn off, the valve that corresponds to that station needs to be repaired. It may just need to be cleaned out, but it could also need a new solenoid or a full valve replacement. The most important thing is that you turn off your irrigation water at the main shut-off point in order to stop the water from flooding the area that the station is set to water. Once your water is off, give us a call and we'll schedule a valve repair service with you!

My sprinkler station won't turn on.

If the station(s) you're trying to turn on aren't working automatically, you probably have an electrical issue related to your sprinkler valves. You could need a solenoid replacement, or the electrical connections in your valve box and timer could need to be cleaned and re-wired. If your sprinkler valve is old, a solenoid replacement may be impossible, as older models of solenoids may have been discontinued. If an old solenoid is bad, you need to replace the valves. Don't worry, though - sprinkler valves last 10-15 years, so you won't have to replace it again any time soon.

My valve box is flooded with water.

If your valve box is flooding, you will need to have it repaired. We recommend turning off your irrigation water and calling a professional sprinkler technician. A sprinkler technician will pump the water out of your box and turn the water back on to determine the source of the leak. If the valve is leaking, it may need to be tightened or rebuilt in order to stop the leak. If the manifold (pipe) is leaking, it will need to be replaced. An experienced sprinkler technician can take care of this quickly and professionally, so you can have peace of mind about your sprinkler system.
